Why You Should Test with Fake Data (and How to Generate It in Seconds)

Using real customer data in development is a privacy risk; using 'test123' hides bugs. Here's how realistic fake data helps — with regional formats for the UAE, India, US and UK.

Every app needs data before it has users: to build screens, seed databases, demo to clients and run tests. There are two bad options — copy production data, or type "test1, test2" — and one good one: realistic generated data.

Why not use production data?

  • Privacy and compliance. Copying real customer records into development laptops, staging servers and demo accounts multiplies the places personal data can leak. UAE PDPL, India's DPDP Act and GDPR all expect you to minimise this.
  • Accidents. Real emails and phone numbers in a test database mean test notifications can reach real people.

Why not "test1, test2"?

Placeholder data hides problems:

  • A 7-character name never overflows a card; "Abdulrahman Al Mansoori" might.
  • 123 never breaks phone validation; +971 50 123 4567 with spaces might.
  • English-only data never reveals that your PDF breaks on an apostrophe in "D'Souza".

Generate realistic data in seconds

  1. Open the free Fake Data Generator.
  2. Choose a region — 🇦🇪 UAE, 🇮🇳 India, 🇺🇸 US or 🇬🇧 UK — so names, phones and addresses match your users.
  3. Tick the fields you need: names, emails, phones, companies, addresses, dates, amounts, UUIDs.
  4. Choose JSON, CSV or SQL INSERT statements and download up to 1,000 rows.

Emails use reserved example domains (example.com, example.ae), so they can't reach a real inbox. UK numbers use the range Ofcom reserves for drama and fiction.

Repeatable data with a seed

Enter a seed and the same settings always produce the same rows. Use it for screenshot tests, documentation and bug reports where you need identical data every time.

Ideas for using fake data

  • Seed a staging database with SQL inserts for realistic demos.
  • Load-test list views and search with hundreds of rows.
  • Design with real-looking content instead of lorem ipsum.
  • Import tests — generate a CSV to check your import mapping before a customer sends theirs.
  • Training environments for new staff, without exposing real customers.
