How to Pick a Random Winner Fairly (Giveaways, Raffles and Team Draws)

Why some 'random' pickers aren't fair, how to run a transparent giveaway draw, and free tools for spinning a wheel, drawing winners and splitting teams.

Whether you're picking a giveaway winner, assigning tasks or splitting a group into teams, people need to trust the result. That means a genuinely random method — and a transparent process.

What makes a pick fair

  1. Every entry has an equal chance. Some simple pickers use biased methods (like Math.random() with modulo) that slightly favour certain positions.
  2. Entries are clean. Duplicates removed (unless multiple entries are allowed), ineligible entries filtered.
  3. The process is visible. Participants can see how the winner was chosen.

Free tools for every kind of draw

The free Random Picker & Wheel Spinner uses your browser's cryptographically secure random generator with rejection sampling, so there's no bias toward any entry:

  • 🎡 Wheel — paste names and spin; optionally remove each winner for the next spin.
  • 🏆 Draw winners — pick several winners at once, with or without repeats.
  • 🔢 Number — random numbers in any range, unique if you like (raffle tickets).
  • 🪙 Coin and 🎲 Dice — quick decisions and games.
  • 👥 Teams — split a list into balanced random teams.

Running a transparent social giveaway

  1. Publish the rules — eligibility, closing date and time (with time zone), how winners are picked and notified.
  2. Export entries after closing. Remove duplicates and ineligible entries (the tool has a one-click de-duplicate).
  3. Screen-record the draw, showing the full entry count and the spin.
  4. Announce publicly and contact winners privately.
  5. Draw reserves in case a winner doesn't respond.

Local rules

Some countries regulate promotional draws. In the UAE, commercial promotions and raffles may need approval from the relevant economic department (for example DET in Dubai). Check before running a prize promotion.

Teams and tasks

Random teams avoid accusations of favouritism in classrooms, offices and sports. For recurring task rotation, shuffle the list once and go in order, so nobody is picked twice before everyone has had a turn.
