Teams and customers spread across the Gulf, India, Europe and North America have a narrow window of shared working hours — and daylight saving moves it twice a year.
The key differences
| From Dubai (GST, UTC+4) | Difference | Changes with DST? |
|---|---|---|
| India (IST, UTC+5:30) | India is 1h 30m ahead | No |
| Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain (UTC+3) | 1 hour behind | No |
| Pakistan (UTC+5) | 1 hour ahead | No |
| UK (GMT/BST) | 4h behind in winter, 3h behind in summer | Yes (UK) |
| Central Europe (CET/CEST) | 3h behind in winter, 2h behind in summer | Yes (EU) |
| New York (EST/EDT) | 9h behind in winter, 8h behind in summer | Yes (US) |
| Singapore (UTC+8) | 4 hours ahead | No |
The UAE and India don't observe daylight saving. The UK and EU change on the last Sundays of March and October; the US changes on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November — so for a few weeks each year the gaps are unusual.
Finding overlap
- Dubai ↔ India: almost a full working day overlaps.
- Dubai ↔ London: good overlap in the London morning (Dubai afternoon).
- Dubai ↔ New York: tight — roughly 5–6 pm Dubai is 9–10 am New York (8–9 am in winter).
- India ↔ US East Coast: essentially no overlap; someone takes an early or late call.
Plan with the converter
The free Time Zone Converter shows any set of cities side by side. Drag the slider to try a meeting time, and the planner grid highlights working hours in green and marks the hours when everyone is working. It also accounts for the Gulf weekend (Saturday–Sunday in the UAE; Friday–Saturday in Saudi Arabia and Qatar).
Scheduling tips
- Name the time zone in every invite — "4 pm GST / 5:30 pm IST".
- Let calendar software convert, and double-check invites around DST change dates.
- Rotate inconvenient slots so the same team isn't always on the late call.
- Prefer async for updates; save live calls for decisions.
- Store times in UTC in software — see Unix timestamps explained.
