The Federal Tax Authority charges administrative penalties for VAT defaults. These are the ones most small businesses meet.
Late registration
A fixed penalty of AED 10,000 applies when a business that must register does not do so on time. Any VAT due on supplies made while unregistered is a separate liability.
Late filing
- AED 1,000 for the first late return
- AED 2,000 for a repeat within 24 months
This applies even when no tax is owed.
Late payment
Late payment was historically charged as 2% immediately, plus further percentages as the delay continued. Published guidance indicates this was replaced by a single annual rate, 14%, calculated monthly on the outstanding balance, for periods assessed on or after 14 April 2026. Check which rule applies to your period, because the law has changed recently.
Other common penalties
- Failing to issue a tax invoice or credit note correctly
- Failing to keep records for the required period
- Failing to notify the FTA of changes to your details
- Incorrect returns
How to avoid them
- Put the filing date in a shared calendar
- Reconcile VAT accounts monthly, not at the deadline
- File on time even if you cannot pay in full, then arrange payment
- Keep tax invoices and records organised
- Use software that produces the VAT report for you
Estimate your exposure
Use the UAE VAT penalty calculator. The late-payment rate is editable because rules differ by period.
