A bank reconciliation proves that the cash balance in your books agrees with the bank, apart from known timing differences. Items on the bank statement but not in the books are usually charges, interest or receipts you have not recorded. Items in the books but not at the bank are typically uncleared cheques or deposits in transit.
Each bank line is matched to at most one ledger line with exactly the same amount, preferring the closest date within the tolerance you choose, and breaking ties by similar descriptions. Map either a signed amount column or separate money-in and money-out columns for each side. Batched deposits and split payments will not pair automatically — they show up in the unmatched lists for you to resolve.
