When inlining images makes sense

A data URI embeds the image inside your HTML, CSS, JSON or email template, saving an HTTP request and avoiding broken image links. It's ideal for tiny icons, email signatures and single-file demos.

When it doesn't

Base64 is about 33% larger than the original file and can't be cached separately by the browser. For anything bigger than a few kilobytes on a website, a normal image file is faster.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. Images are processed with your browser's canvas — they never leave your device, so it's safe for ID photos, product shots and screenshots containing private information.

Why is the Base64 string bigger than my image?

Base64 represents every 3 bytes as 4 text characters, adding roughly 33% overhead (plus the data: prefix).

Do Base64 images work in email?

Many email clients — including Gmail on the web — block data URI images. For email, host images on a server or attach them as inline (CID) attachments.
