Free Accounting Software for Small Business: 8 Things to Check in Any Country
Free trials, free tiers and free betas differ. Eight checks before you trust a free tool with your books, wherever you operate.
Editorial disclosure: Pyalm publishes and maintains the products and free tools discussed on this site. Regulatory statements are linked to primary sources where applicable. No independent professional review is claimed unless a reviewer is explicitly named.
"Free" accounting software can mean very different things. Before you move your books, check these eight points. They apply in the US, UK, UAE and anywhere else.
- What kind of free? Trial, limited plan, open source, or beta. Know when it ends.
- Local tax support. Sales tax, VAT or GST rates and returns for your country. Many global tools are strongest in a few markets.
- Invoice requirements. Does it print the fields your tax authority requires?
- Double-entry accounting. An invoice maker is not a ledger. You need a P&L and Balance Sheet for tax time.
- Data export. Can you leave with your data as CSV or Excel?
- Bank connections or imports in your country.
- Limits. Users, invoices, clients or storage caps.
- Support. How do you reach a human when something breaks?
