Cropping is the quickest way to improve a photo and the only way to meet strict upload requirements — square profile pictures, 16:9 banners, or passport photos at an exact ratio.
How to crop an image
- Open the free Image Cropper and choose your image.
- Pick an aspect ratio — Free, 1:1, 4:5, 3:2, 16:9, 9:16 or a passport preset.
- Drag the crop box to frame the subject; drag the corners to resize.
- Rotate ↺ ↻ or flip if needed.
- Optionally set an output width in pixels, choose JPG, PNG or WebP, and download.
Common aspect ratios
| Ratio | Used for |
|---|---|
| 1:1 | Profile pictures, Instagram square, product images |
| 4:5 | Instagram portrait posts |
| 16:9 | YouTube thumbnails, banners, presentations |
| 9:16 | Stories, Reels, Shorts |
| 3:2 | Standard camera photos, prints |
| 35:45 (7:9) | Passport photos in the UAE, India, UK and Schengen |
| 1:1 (2×2 in) | US passport and visa photos |
Passport and visa photos
Requirements typically include:
- Ratio and size — e.g. 35×45 mm; online portals often ask for specific pixels such as 600×600 or 413×531.
- Head size — the face usually fills 70–80% of the height.
- Plain light background, neutral expression, no shadows.
Choose the passport preset, frame from just above the head to the chin plus a little shoulder, set the output width the portal asks for, and export as JPG. Then check the file size; compress with the Image Compressor if needed. Always confirm the current rules on the official portal.
Cropping vs resizing
Cropping removes part of the picture; resizing scales the whole picture. To get an exact size like 1080×1080, crop to 1:1 first, then set the output width to 1080.
Your images stay on your device
Pyalm's image tools process files with your browser's canvas. Nothing is uploaded — useful for ID photos, product shots before launch, and screenshots containing customer data.
Automating ID photo checks?
If your business collects ID photos for onboarding, cropping and checking them by hand doesn't scale. FaceTrust automates face detection, liveness checks and ID document OCR through a self-hosted API.
