Internet Speed Test Explained: Download, Upload, Ping and Jitter
What each speed-test number means, what speeds you actually need for work, streaming and calls, and how to get an accurate result.

A speed test gives you four numbers. Knowing what each one means tells you whether your connection is the problem — and what to do about it.
The four numbers
| Measure | Unit | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Download | Mbps | Streaming, browsing, downloading files |
| Upload | Mbps | Video calls, sending files, cloud backups, CCTV |
| Ping (latency) | ms | How responsive things feel — calls, gaming, remote desktop |
| Jitter | ms | How much latency varies — choppy video and robotic audio |
What speeds do you need?
| Activity | Download | Upload | Ping |
|---|---|---|---|
| Email and browsing | 5 Mbps | 1 Mbps | < 100 ms |
| HD video call (Zoom/Teams) | 5 Mbps | 3 Mbps | < 50 ms |
| HD streaming | 5–10 Mbps | — | — |
| 4K streaming | 25 Mbps | — | — |
| Small office (5–10 people) | 100+ Mbps | 20+ Mbps | < 30 ms |
| Uploading large files / backups | — | 50+ Mbps | — |
Multiply by the number of people or devices using the connection at once.
Run a test
Open the free Internet Speed Test and press Start. It measures latency, then download, then upload against Cloudflare's nearest data centre — usually in your city or region — in about 20 seconds. It uses roughly 50–150 MB of data.
Getting an accurate result
- Use a cable if you can; Wi-Fi often halves real speed.
- Pause other downloads, streaming and cloud sync.
- Test at different times — evening congestion is common.
- Test from the device that has the problem. Old phones and laptops can't always reach gigabit speeds.
If results are poor
- Restart the router and modem.
- Move closer to the router or add a mesh system or access points.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for nearby devices.
- Check your plan's actual speed; call your ISP with your test results if you consistently get far less.
High ping, good download?
Bandwidth and latency are different. A fast plan can still feel slow on calls if Wi-Fi interference or a distant server adds latency and jitter. A wired connection usually fixes it.
Fast connection, slow website?
If your connection tests well but your own website is sluggish, the problem is the site — heavy images, slow hosting, too many scripts. Pyalm builds lightweight Next.js websites that load quickly even on mobile data.
