A sitemap tells search engines which URLs you want indexed and when they last changed. It matters most for new sites with few backlinks, large sites, and pages that aren't well linked internally — exactly the pages Google might otherwise miss.
Google uses <loc> and an accurate <lastmod>; it ignores <changefreq> and <priority>. Keep lastmod honest — only update it when the content really changes — and list only canonical, indexable URLs that return 200.
