Word count drives essays, articles and briefs; character count drives titles, meta descriptions, SMS and social posts. The counter shows both, with and without spaces, plus sentences, paragraphs and lines. Reading time assumes about 238 words per minute, speaking time about 140.
Search results typically show around 60 characters of a page title and 150–160 of a meta description before truncating, an X post allows 280, and a single SMS segment holds 160 characters of plain text. Pick a limit and the bar turns red when you go over. The most-used words list helps you spot repetition and check that your main keyword appears naturally.
