UTM Parameters Guide: Tag Links for Analytics
What utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign mean, naming conventions that keep reports clean, and how to track WhatsApp, email and social links.

You post a link on LinkedIn, send it in a WhatsApp broadcast, put it in a newsletter — and your analytics shows a pile of "direct" traffic. UTM parameters fix that. They are short labels added to the end of a URL that analytics tools read to attribute each visit.
What the five parameters mean
| Parameter | Purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | Where the traffic comes from | linkedin, newsletter, google |
| utm_medium | The channel type | social, email, cpc, referral |
| utm_campaign | The promotion or initiative | diwali_sale_2026 |
| utm_term | Paid search keyword (optional) | accounting_software_uae |
| utm_content | Tell similar links or ads apart (optional) | banner_a, footer_link |
Google Analytics expects at least source, medium and campaign.
An example
https://www.example.com/offer?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=october_launch&utm_content=hero_button
The visit is reported as newsletter / email in the october_launch campaign, from the hero_button link.
Naming conventions that keep reports clean
UTM values are case-sensitive: LinkedIn, linkedin and Linkedin become three sources. Agree a convention and stick to it:
- Lowercase everything.
- Underscores instead of spaces (spaces become %20).
- Consistent vocabulary for sources and mediums: email, social, cpc, referral, display, affiliate.
- Dated campaign names if you reuse them: spring_sale_2026.
- A shared spreadsheet or tool so everyone uses the same values.
Recommended source/medium pairs
| Where the link lives | source | medium |
|---|---|---|
| LinkedIn post | social | |
| Instagram bio | social | |
| WhatsApp broadcast | messaging | |
| Email newsletter | newsletter | |
| Google Ads | cpc | |
| Meta Ads | paid_social | |
| Partner site | partner_name | referral |
Common mistakes
- Tagging internal links. A UTM link on your own site starts a new session and overwrites the real source. Only tag links that bring people to your site.
- Inconsistent capitalisation.
- Using UTMs on platforms that already auto-tag (Google Ads has auto-tagging) without understanding the interaction.
- Putting personal data (emails, names) in UTM values. They end up in analytics and server logs.
- Very long, meaningless names nobody can interpret later.
- Forgetting short links. A link shortener or QR code should wrap the tagged URL.
SEO and UTMs
UTM links don't hurt SEO when your pages declare a canonical URL, because search engines consolidate the tagged and untagged versions. Avoid putting UTM links in your own navigation or sitemaps.
QR codes and print
For offline campaigns, tag the URL first and then generate the code, using a different medium such as qr or print. Use the QR Code Generator after building the tagged link. For WhatsApp click-to-chat links, see the WhatsApp Link Generator.
Build your tagged links
Enter the URL and campaign details in the free UTM Link Builder: it lowercases values, offers quick fills for LinkedIn, newsletters, WhatsApp and ads, warns about missing required parameters and keeps recent links in your browser only. Then check how the page will appear in search with the SERP Preview.
From clicks to customers
Tracking is only useful if the website converts. Pyalm builds websites, landing pages and automation that connect campaigns to enquiries — see website development and WhatsApp tools with Tenreply, or get in touch.
