Database Hosting Providers Compared: Managed PostgreSQL, MySQL and MongoDB
How to choose a managed database provider — AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, DigitalOcean, Supabase, Neon, MongoDB Atlas and others — compared on features, scaling, backups, regions and lock-in.

Running your own database server means patches, backups, failover and 2am alerts. Managed database services handle most of that for you. The question is which one.
The main options
| Provider type | Examples | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Big cloud | AWS RDS / Aurora, Azure Database, Google Cloud SQL | Enterprise needs, wide region choice, deep integrations |
| Developer clouds | DigitalOcean Managed Databases, Linode/Akamai | Simple, predictable setups |
| Postgres platforms | Supabase, Neon | Fast app development, branching, serverless scaling |
| Document databases | MongoDB Atlas | Flexible JSON documents, multi-cloud |
| Multi-cloud managed | Aiven and similar | One provider across several clouds |
What to compare
- Engine and version: PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis
- Regions: is there one close to your users, or in the UAE for data residency?
- Backups: automatic, point-in-time recovery, retention
- High availability: standby replicas and automatic failover
- Scaling: vertical, read replicas, serverless
- Security: encryption, private networking, access control
- Pricing: compute, storage, I/O, backups and data transfer
- Lock-in: how easy is it to export and move?
Rules of thumb
- Starting a new app? Managed PostgreSQL is a safe, flexible default.
- Already on a cloud? Use that cloud's managed database to keep networking simple.
- Need UAE residency? Check providers with UAE regions. See cloud hosting in the UAE.
- Spiky traffic? Look at serverless or autoscaling options.
Migrating databases
Test the migration on a copy, check versions and extensions, plan for minimal downtime with replication or a short write freeze, and verify row counts afterwards. See the server migration checklist.
