GPU Servers for AI: Cloud vs Dedicated, and How to Choose

How to choose a GPU server for AI workloads — inference vs training, GPU memory, common NVIDIA options, cloud vs dedicated vs on-premise, and how to avoid overspending.

GPUs are the most expensive part of most AI projects, so getting the choice right matters. The first question is what you're doing: running models (inference) or training them.

Inference vs training

Inference Training / fine-tuning
What Answering requests with a model Teaching a model on your data
Need Enough memory to hold the model, plus speed Much more memory and compute
Duration Always on Bursts (hours or days)
Usually A single GPU, sized right Larger or multiple GPUs, rented

GPU memory is the key spec

The model (plus its working memory) must fit in GPU memory. Common data-centre GPUs range from about 24 GB (for example, NVIDIA L4 or A10 class) to 80 GB (A100 or H100 class). Larger models or many users need more memory, or several GPUs.

Cloud, dedicated or on-premise?

Option Pros Cons
Cloud GPU (hourly) Start fast, scale up or down, no upfront cost Expensive if always on
Dedicated rented server Lower monthly cost for steady use Less flexible
On-premise hardware Full control, data stays on site Upfront cost, power, cooling, maintenance

Avoid overspending

  • Benchmark first: test the smallest model and GPU that meets your quality bar
  • Quantise models to fit smaller GPUs
  • Batch requests to use the GPU efficiently
  • Shut down training instances when idle
  • Use APIs for low or unpredictable volume

UAE data residency

If data must stay in the UAE, check which providers offer GPUs in UAE regions, or consider on-premise. See cloud hosting in the UAE.
