Face Check-In for Events: How It Works, Privacy, and When to Use It
Face recognition check-in lets guests walk in without a phone or paper ticket. Here's how enrolment and matching work, what UAE privacy expectations mean for organisers, and when it beats QR.

Face check-in replaces "find your ticket, open the app, turn up the brightness" with a glance at a camera. Done well, it gets a guest through the gate in about a second and makes ticket sharing much harder.
How it works
- Opt-in enrolment. When booking, the guest chooses to add a selfie. A liveness check confirms it's a live person, not a photo of a photo.
- Template creation. The system turns the selfie into a numerical face template linked to the ticket.
- Matching at the gate. A camera captures the guest's face and compares it with the enrolled templates. If it matches a valid, unused ticket, the gate opens.
- Fallback. Guests who don't opt in, or whose match fails, use their QR ticket.
Where it shines
- VIP and hospitality entrances, where speed and recognition matter
- Multi-day conferences and festivals, where guests enter many times
- High-value tickets, where transfers and resale are a fraud risk
- Staff and crew access to restricted zones
Privacy: do it properly
Face data is biometric data, which UAE data protection law treats as sensitive. As a minimum:
- Make enrolment optional and get explicit consent
- Say clearly what is stored, why and for how long
- Delete templates after the event
- Keep data encrypted and restrict who can access it
- Always offer a non-biometric alternative
Face vs QR vs wristbands
| Method | Speed | Fraud resistance | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| QR | Good | Medium | Most events |
| NFC/RFID wristband | Very good | High | Festivals, cashless |
| Face | Excellent | Very high | VIP, multi-day, high value |
Most events use a mix. See RFID vs QR vs face.
Pyalm Events & Ticketing runs face check-in with opt-in enrolment and QR as a fallback, using the same identity technology as FaceTrust.
