RFID Wristbands vs QR Tickets vs Face Check-In: Which to Use

A side-by-side comparison of QR tickets, RFID/NFC wristbands and face recognition for event entry — speed, cost, fraud resistance, guest experience and best-fit events.

Editorial disclosure: Pyalm publishes and maintains the products and free tools discussed on this site. Regulatory statements are linked to primary sources where applicable. No independent professional review is claimed unless a reviewer is explicitly named.

There's no single best entry method. The right choice depends on your event's size, length, ticket value and budget, and many events mix two or three methods.

Comparison

QR ticket RFID / NFC wristband Face check-in
Speed per guest 3–6 sec 1–2 sec ~1 sec
Hardware cost Low (phones) Medium–high (wristbands, readers) Medium (cameras, tablets)
Fraud resistance Medium High Very high
Re-entry OK Excellent Excellent
Cashless payments No Yes Possible
Guest effort Find ticket Wear band Opt-in selfie once
Works without a phone Printed only Yes Yes

Best-fit events

  • QR: most concerts, conferences, workshops and community events
  • RFID/NFC: multi-day festivals, cashless venues, theme parks, sports with zones
  • Face: VIP lanes, multi-day conferences, high-value or high-demand tickets, staff access

Mixing methods

A common setup is a face check-in VIP lane, QR general lanes and a box office that prints a QR for walk-ups. For festivals, guests swap their QR ticket for a wristband at first entry, then use the band for re-entry and payments.

Don't forget offline

Whatever you choose, your scanners must keep validating if the network drops, then sync when it's back.
