Few products have shaped world history like black pepper, and much of that history runs through Kerala's Malabar coast.
Ancient trade
Long before modern shipping, pepper from the Malabar coast travelled to Rome, the Middle East and China. The ancient port of Muziris, near present-day Kodungallur, was a major hub. Pepper was so valued it was sometimes called "black gold".
Arab and Chinese traders
For centuries, Arab merchants carried Malabar pepper across the Indian Ocean to the Gulf and on to Europe, and Chinese fleets visited the coast too. Calicut grew into one of the richest trading ports of its time.
1498: Vasco da Gama reaches Calicut
The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama arrived near Calicut in 1498, opening a direct sea route from Europe to India. The spice trade drew the Portuguese, Dutch and British to the coast in the centuries that followed.
Pepper and the Gulf
The trade links between Kerala and the Gulf are centuries old, which is part of why Dubai remains a natural trading partner for Malabar spices today.
Kerala pepper today
India is a major pepper producer and consumer, with Kerala and Karnataka the main growing states. Kerala pepper is still prized for its bold berries, aroma and pungency, and Malabar Pepper carries a Geographical Indication.
A living tradition
Many families on the Malabar coast have traded pepper for generations. Buyers who value long relationships, consistent grading and honest dealing still find them here. Read what makes a trusted black pepper seller.
