International trade fraud is real, and spice and commodity traders are frequent targets. Most scams follow a few patterns. Learn them, and verify every new counterparty.

Common scams
| Scam | How it works |
|---|---|
| Fake buyer, big order | An urgent large order, then a request for "registration" or "inspection" fees |
| Changed bank details | An email (often from a hacked account) says the supplier's bank has changed |
| Fake letter of credit | An L/C that looks real but isn't from a genuine bank, or has unworkable clauses |
| Too-good-to-be-true supplier | Prices well below market, full advance, then no shipment |
| Document fraud | Fake bills of lading or certificates |
| Quality switch | Sample is good, shipment is not |
How to verify
- Company registry: check the company exists and the address is real
- Independent contact: call the company on a number from its official website, not from the email
- References: speak to other buyers or suppliers
- Bank details: the account name must match the company, so confirm any change by phone
- L/C check: have your own bank authenticate the L/C
- Bill of lading: verify with the shipping line
- Inspection: use a third-party inspection company before loading for large lots
Red flags
- Urgency and pressure
- Free email addresses
- Requests for fees before any business
- Payment to a third party or a different country
- Refusal of samples, inspection or a video call
- Spelling mistakes in "official" documents
Start small
Trust is built over shipments. Begin with a smaller order and secure terms, then grow.
