What Makes a Trusted Black Pepper Seller? 10 Signs to Look For

How to recognise a trustworthy black pepper seller — consistent grading, transparency on density and moisture, lab reports, references, clear contracts and long-term relationships.

In the pepper trade, reputation is built over decades and lost in one bad shipment. Here's how buyers recognise sellers they can rely on year after year.

10 signs of a trusted seller

  1. They talk in specs, not just grade names. Bulk density, moisture, light berries and extraneous matter, not just "MG1".
  2. They send real samples. Pre-shipment samples from the actual lot.
  3. They share lab reports. Residues, aflatoxins, microbiology and no ethylene oxide, from accredited labs.
  4. They know your market's rules. EU limits, documentation and labelling.
  5. They're close to origin. They can explain the crop, the region and the season.
  6. They give honest market updates, even when prices move against them.
  7. They put it in writing. Clear contracts with tolerances, claims and dispute terms.
  8. They have references. Other buyers who'll speak for them.
  9. They handle claims fairly and quickly, without arguing over every point.
  10. They're consistent. The tenth shipment matches the first.

Warning signs

  • Prices well below the market
  • Vague specs, or none at all
  • No lab reports
  • Pressure for full advance on a first order
  • Samples that don't match shipments
