Fake tickets hurt everyone. The fan is turned away at the gate, the organiser takes the blame, and the scalper keeps the money. The fix is several layers of protection.
The threats
- Screenshots and duplicates of a single QR ticket
- Counterfeit tickets sold on social media
- Bots buying up inventory at release time
- Scalpers reselling at inflated prices
- Chargeback fraud with stolen cards
Controls that work
| Control | Stops |
|---|---|
| Real-time scan validation | Duplicates and reuse |
| Dynamic or rotating QR codes | Screenshots |
| Named tickets with ID or face check | Resale and transfer abuse |
| Purchase limits per buyer | Bulk buying |
| Bot and fraud detection at checkout | Bots and stolen cards |
| Official resale and transfer | Pushes resale onto your own system |
| Clear messaging: "buy only from…" | Counterfeit sellers |
Face check-in is the strongest lock
A ticket linked to an enrolled face can't be used by someone else. For high-value or high-demand events, offering face check-in (with QR as a fallback) makes resale much harder. See face check-in.
Offer an official transfer
People do have genuine reasons to pass on a ticket. A built-in transfer or name change, possibly with a fee, keeps them off the grey market.
Tell your guests
Publish the official ways to buy and warn people about unofficial sellers in your WhatsApp messages and on your ticket page.
