Free Registration or Paid Ticketing? Choosing the Right Option for Your Event

When to use free registration, approval-based sign-up or paid ticketing for your event, how each affects attendance and permits, and how to switch or combine them.

Editorial disclosure: Pyalm publishes and maintains the products and free tools discussed on this site. Regulatory statements are linked to primary sources where applicable. No independent professional review is claimed unless a reviewer is explicitly named.

Every event needs a way for people to sign up. The question is whether they register for free, apply for approval or buy a ticket, and you can mix all three.

The three options

Option Best for Watch out for
Free registration Community events, launches, open days, webinars-to-venue Higher no-shows
Approval-based B2B, trade, VIP and invite-only events Needs someone to review applications
Paid ticketing Concerts, festivals, conferences, brunches, parties Permit, ticket approval and VAT in Dubai

Mixing them

  • Free general entry + paid VIP
  • Free for invited buyers + paid for visitors (exhibitions)
  • Paid early bird + free for speakers and press
  • Refundable deposit on free events to cut no-shows

What changes with paid tickets

  • Permits and ticket approval: in Dubai, ticket categories and prices are approved with the permit. See ticket approval.
  • VAT: prices include 5% VAT, with tax invoices. See VAT on event tickets.
  • Payments and payouts: cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay, with settlement after the event.
  • Refund terms: clear rules at checkout.

Can you switch later?

Yes. Many events start with free registration to build interest, then launch paid tiers once the permit and ticket approval are in place.

Compare the numbers with the ticket pricing calculator, and read free vs paid events.
